Irvin E. Hornberger, son of Dolin Ellsworth and Cora Edna (Beachell) Hornberger, was born in Snydertown, Northumberland County, PA, on 23 Nov 1915. At the age of 79, he died in Millmont, RR 1, on 6 May 1995. He was buried in Pomfret Manor Cemetery, Sunbury, Northumberland County, PA, on 10 May 1995.

On 6 Feb 1937 when Irvin E was 21, he married Rachel Elsie GROW, daughter of William Elwood GROW & Rachel Elsie RORICK.

Irvin E. Hornberger, 79 Millmont RR1

MILLMONT –– Irvin Elwood “Whitey” Hornberger, 79, of Patty Mountain Road, Millmont RR1, died at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, May 6, 1995, at his home after an illness of six months. Born Nov. 23, 1915, in Snydertown, Northumberland county, he was a son of the late Dolin Ellsworth and Cora Edna (Beachel) Hornberger. He was married Feb. 6, 1937, to the former Rachel Elsie Grow, who died March 15, 1993.

He lived in Hartley Township, Union County, since 1973 and prior to that lived in Lewisburg. Mr Hornberger attended Northumberland High School. He was an avid horseman and fisherman. He retired in 1977 after eight years’ employment at American Car and Foundry Inc., Milton.

He and his wife owned and operated the Dynamite Restaurant and Hornberger’s Char-Broiled Restaurant in Lewisburg and Mifflinburg from 1950-66. He was a member of Lincoln Chapel United Methodist Church, Millmont RR1; Western Union County Senior Citizens Association; Millmont West End Area Lions Club; and was a founding member of the Circle M Riding Club.

He is survived by three children, Irvin E. “Pete” of Reading, Cynthia Ann
Greksouk of San Diego, Calif. and Kerry M. Bailor of New Columbia RR1; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one brother, Dolin E. of Millmont RR1. He was preceded in death by one sister, Dorothy.

The funeral will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the James L. Schwartz Home for Funerals, 247 Chestnut St., Mifflinburg, by the Rev. William Adams Jr. of Selinsgrove. Burial will be in Pomfret Manor Cemetery, Sunbury. Visitors may call after 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Rachel Elsie was born in Sunbury, Northumberland County, PA, on 3 Jul 1916. At the age of 76, she died in Williamsport, PA, on 15 Mar 1993 in the Williamsport Hospital and Medical Center. Rachel Elsie was buried in Pomfret Manor Cemetery, Sunbury, Northumberland County, PA, on 19 Mar 1993.

MILLMONT – Rachel Elsie Hornberger, 76, of Patty Mountain Road, Millmont RD1, died at 2 p.m. Monday, March 15, 1993, at the Williamsport Hospital and Medical Center following an illness of five weeks.

Born July 3, 1916, at Sunbury, she was a daughter of the late William Elwood and Rachel Elsie Rorick Grow. She was married to Irvin Elwood “Whitey” Hornberger. She lived in Hartley Township, Union County, since 1973, and prior to that lived in Lewisburg. She was a 1934 graduate of Sunbury High School.

Mrs. Hornberger retired in 1980 after more than 16 years employment by JPM Inc., Lewisburg. Prior to that she assisted her husband from 1949-66 as owners-operators of Hornberger’s Restaurant, Lewisburg, and Dynamite Restaurant, Mifflinburg.

She was a member of Lincoln Chapel United Methodist Church, Millmont RD1; the Millmont West Union Area Lions Club, where she was a former assistant secretary and was serving on the membership committee; and was a member and secretary of the Union County West End Senior Citizens Association.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Irvin E. “Pete” of Reading; two daughters, Cynthia Ann Greksouk of San Diego and Kerry M. Bailor of New Columbia RD1; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Elizabeth Martz of Blue Island, Ill.; and a brother, Elwood Grow of Sidney, N.Y. She was preceded in death by a brother, Guy.

The funeral will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the James L. Schwartz Home for Funerals, 247 Chestnut St., Mifflinburg, by the Rev. F. Jeffrey Mugridge. Burial will be in Pomfret Manor Cemetery, Sunbury. Friends may call from 5:30 p.m. until the time of the service Friday at the funeral home.
