Marlin Lewis Brosious was born in Upper Augusta Township, Sunbury, Northumberland County, PA, on 8 Sep 1919. At the age of 58, he died in Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, Montour County, PA, on 2 Oct 1977. Marlin was buried in Pomfret Manor Cemetery, Sunbury, Northumberland County, PA, on 5 Oct 1977. The funeral service was conducted by a true friend of the family Reverend Leroy S. Heller.

Marlin was dedicated on 4 Aug 1929, Stonington, Northumberland County, PA . Dedicated to the Lord by Pastor Rev N. H. Wolf. Marlin and family attended the Emmanuel Bible Fellowship Church, Sunbury, PA.

Marlin Lewis appears on the census for Upper Augusta Township, Northumberland County, PA, in 1920.

Occupation: Pennsylvania Railroad - Conductor, and Brake Man.

On 8 Jun 1940 when Marlin Lewis was 20, he married Dorothy Elizabeth PHILLIPS, daughter of Julius Augustus PHILLIPS (5 Apr 1893-4 May 1957) & Ada Mabel HORNBERGER (16 Jul 1895-14 Feb 1984), in Sunbury, Northumberland, PA. The marriage was performed by Rev. N. H. Wolf.
Dorothy Elizabeth was born in Sunbury, Northumberland County, PA, on 15 Jan 1922.

They had the following children:

Marlin enlisted in the U S Navy June 23, 1944; He was Honorably Discharged February 13, 1946. The Highest rank or rating he held was “Coxswain.” During his World War II tour of duty he was awarded the “American Theatre Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Ribbon, and Victory Medal.”

Marlin served aboard the US Bland and US Brule; these ships were "Victory Ship" transport types.

Brule survived the atomic bomb tests at Bikini and following the test period was decommissioned and maintained for radiological and structural studies. She was destroyed by sinking 11 May 1948.

Upon Marlin’s passing, the family received, from Jimmy Carter then President of the United States, a certificate honoring “the memory of and recognition to devoted and selfless consecration to the service of our country in the Armed Forces of the United States.”

 

Fast Action at Milepost 19

Marlin spent the adult portion of his life working for the Pennsylvania Railroad. He received a commendation for exceptional effort during one of his road trips; the following article (including a picture of Marlin) appeared in the company employee newspaper.

To Marlin Brosious came a letter of commendation from William C. Wieters, superintendent of the Harrisburg Division. “Nobody needs to stretch his imagination very far to visualize the catastrophe that you prevented by your alertness,” Mr. Wieters wrote. “I would like very much to express not only my personal thanks and appreciation but that of my superiors as well. “It is men like you that make this Company the great railroad it is.”

BROSIOUS, MARLIN L., 58, 266 East Drive, Sunbury, died Sunday, Oct. 2, 1977, in the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. The funeral will be conducted at 11a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, 1977, in the Jerre Wirt Blank Funeral Home, 395 State St., Sunbury. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday evening. Burial will be in Pomfret Manor Cemetery, Sunbury. Funeral arrangements by the Jerre Wirt Blank Funeral Home Sunbury.
