EVE CATHARINE
BROSIUS

Johann George Brosius, son of J. Nicholas (1757-1831) and Anna Catharine [Mayer] Brosius, was born on 25 Mar 1788. At the age of 63, he died on 1 Oct 1851. Johann George was buried in family plot containing a large gravestone monument near the church.

“George Brosius was a merchant in Dalmatia and one of the founders of Trinity Lutheran and Reformed church in 1845. He was born March 25, 1788, the son of Nicholas and Ann Brosious and was baptized at Stone Valley Church on May 1, 1788. His sponsors were John George and Susanna Brosius, the founder of Georgetown and probably his uncle. On November 2, 1806, George Brosius, now age 18 is listed in the Stone Valley records among “catechumens, who were confirmed and admitted to the holy communion held by Rev. Conrad Walter, pastor of the Lutheran congregation of Steinthal (Stone Valley).

“He married Eve Catharine Schaffer, born May 30, 1792, who was the daughter of Michael and Rosanna Schaffer. They are buried in the cemetery of Trinity Church, Dalmatia. George and Catherine Brosius did not have any children and both died intestate. They owned considerable real estate adjacent to Dalmatia which became the object of a case in Northumberland County Orphan’s Court. The property was divided into five parts for distribution among the seven brothers and sisters (or their heirs) of George Brosius. It was originally part of the tract “Fellowship” purchased by Sebastian Brosius in 1773 which includes the site of Dalmatia. Some of his property ultimately became part of Ressler’s Addition to Dalmatia, encompassing the part of town north of Sunbury Street.
