Katharine Carpenter, 93 , Sunbury
Katharine Rockefeller Carpenter, 93, of N. 11th St. died at 3:55 a.m. Friday morning, April 9, 1999, at her home.
She was born March 4, 1906, a daughter of the late Charles and Mary Derr Rockefeller. She was married to Alvin W. Carpenter, Esq., who passed away in 1977.
She was a member of the Derr Rockefeller Auxiliary of Sunbury Community Hospital an organization founded and named for her mother. She co-founded a snack bar at the hospital.
Here greatest interest in life were her three sons and their families.
Mrs. Carpenter was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Sunbury, where she was active in various activities.
Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law. Derr A of Mechanicsburg, attorney John and Jane of Sunbury and Peter and Janet of Scottsdale, Ariz; grandchildren, Kathy of Acton Mass., Melissa of Jacksonville, Fla., Jeff of Radnor, Elizabeth of New York City, Susan of Pipersville, Pa., Karen of Alta Loma, Ca., and Jean and Peter of Scottsdale; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Marion Rockefeller, Emily Fleming and Jean Klingman.
There will be no viewing, but visitors may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Mrs. Carpenter’s home at 101 N. 11th St., Sunbury. A memorial service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Apple Chaple, Zion Lutheran Church, Market & South Fifth streets, Sunbury by Rev. Richard Fangman and the Robert Koons.
A private burial will be in Pomfort Manor Cemetery, Sunbury.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the snack bar at Mary Derr Rockefeller Auxiliary, Sunbury Community Hospital N. 11th St., Sunbury, Pa 17801, and Sun Home Hospice, 61 Duke St., Northumberland, Pa., 17857. Funeral arrangements were by Jerre Wirt Blank Funeral Home, 395 State St., Sunbury, Pa.
*On May 22, 1928, Alvin Witmer Carpenter married Katherine Derr Rockefeller. They became the parents of three children: Derr Alvin, born January 18, 1931; John Andrew, born May 9, 1931, Peter Rockefeller, born April 18, 1939. Mrs. Carpenter is a daughter of Charles W. Rockefeller, a well-known attorney-at-law; and a granddaughter of Hon. William M. Rockefeller, who for twenty years was Judge of the Northumberland County Courts, and of John Derr, for twenty-two years president of the first National Bank of Sunbury.
