Mar. 13, 1822 - Feb. 29, 1896
Served as Inspector of Eastern State prison for twenty five years.
1856 - 1880 Acted as a delegate at all the Democratic National Convention.
1864 ran for Congress and lost.
Rose to rank of Brigadier General in the Pennsylvania Militia, and commanded the Third Militia Brigade at the beginning of the Civil War. He later commanded the 1st Division, Pennsylvania Militia, and all troops in Philadelphia that were still under state service.
