Born in Naperville, Illinois

He is most famous for his play-by-play radio and television broadcasts for the Philadelphia Phillies from 1971 until 2009. He receieved the Baseball Hall of Fame's Ford C. Frick Broadcasting Award in 2002.

He began his broadcasting career in 1962 while in the United States Army. In 1965 until 1971 he broadcasted foe the Houston Astros. In 1971 he began broadcasting for the Phillies, which evenlually led to him being paired with Hall of Fame player Richie Ashburn. The two became a major part of the city's sports lore and memory. The broadcasting team was such a major part of sports that the fact they were not allowed to call the the Phillies game in the 1980 World Series that it cause the MLB rules to be change allowing local broadcaster to do the games on local radio. His standard call for a home run - "That ball is outta here", has become one of the legendary baseball calls.

On April 13, 2009 he was preparing to broadcast a game between the Phillies and the Washington Nationals when he collapsed in the broadcasting booth and died shortly after.
