He was a Business Magnate and Social Reformer. He was orphaned at the age of fourteen with a sister, 16, he had to support. To support them both he got a job as an apprentice saw maker. At this job he learned how to make saws and how to make the machines that made them. As he learned the bisness he ventured out and developed a tempered steel that made his saws were both flexible and strong. He began making and selling his saws out of a basement, starting his own business in 1840. He had real success when he chose to build his factory in the Tacony section of Philadelphia. He dreamed of not only building a factory, but a working class community. He wanted his workers to live in homes with open space and have a chance to own their own houses. He believed it was his responsiblity to meet his workers' economic, social, and cultural needs. In 1872 the saw factory was constructed by 1876 the workers' homes were built. He established a loan association so that his workers could buy homes. He also gave cash advances to his employees so that they could buy their homes. He had fresh water piped inton Tacony from the Delaware River. .
