John Boulton Young

Born 25 Sept 1848, died 17 Oct 1861


John Boulton Young enlisted as a “drum boy” in Compamy C, the Sunbury Guards, on or about the 19th of August 1861 and then departed for Harrisburg the following day.

The Sunbury Guards became a part of the Forty-Seventh Pennsylvania Volunteers Regiment. They were organized at Camp Curtin on the 1st of September, 1861. The Regiment proceeded from Harrisburg to Wasington on the 21st of September and stationed on Kalorama Heights, and on the 27th ordered to join the advance of the army, in which it was assigned to the Third Brigade of General W. F. Smith’s division.

With that Brigade it moved to Camp Griffin, and on the 11th of October participated in the grand review at Bailey’s Cross Roads.

John Bolton Young perished on October 17th 1861 at the young age of 13. Cause of death is believed to be small pox.

His body was returned home for burial at the Sunbury City Cemetery.

John Boulton Young's uniform and drum are on display at the Northumberland County Historical Society Museum.
